In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious start to his administration.

An Unprecedented Figure

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing basic services: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
